The Shade Tree shelter, here in Las Vegas, is the only 24-hour accessible shelter designed specifically to meet the needs of women and children in Southern Nevada. During the last year alone The Shade Tree provided over 80,000 nights of shelter, and the daytime shelter programs served an additional 17,000 plus women and children.

The Shade Tree was mentioned in our newsletter a few months ago and is again requesting donations in the form of;

Women's grooming, hair care and hygiene items, women's sweat pants/shirts/hoodies (S-3X), underwear (5-11), wht. socks, P.J.'s, tennis shoes(5-10) and shower shoes.

Children's P.J.'s, clothing, toys and diapers. Pedialyte, baby (soy) formula. Canned soups, chili, vegetables and fruit.

Towels, blankets and twin sheets. Trash bags, paper towels, toilet paper,

Laundry soap, bleach, Windex, Pinesol, Simple Green and Lysol. Pet food and K-litter are also welcome.

Paper/styro goods like plates, cups, napkins, zip-lock bags, etc. are also needed.

Donations may be dropped off to the Humanitarian Service Room or directly to the Shade Tree.

I just heard of your wonderful blog through our Relief Society President. This is fabulous--so uplifiting, encouraging, and informative! Thank you for spending the time and taking the efforts to put this together. I will put things together to donate for Shade Tree. Is it okay if items are in used but good condition? Thanks again,

Items sent from the Humanitarian Service Room should be in new or like-new condition.

Preparation is Key

The church’s ability to quickly respond is the result of preparation and opportunity. As in the story of Joseph, Egypt was advised to store up resources against times when the fruits of a plentiful harvest would be needed in a time of scarcity. Likewise we have been told to prepare for a time of need by having 72 hour packs and a year's supply if possible. When the event occurs it may be too late (like the 10 virgins and the oil) so the time to act is now. Since all eventualities can't be anticipated general preparedness is the best position to be in.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints follows this principle in preparation for various global scenarios, by staging a substantial, though finite quantity of essential supplies. LDS Humanitarian Services (HS) continues to respond to catastrophic events throughout the world, bringing comfort and support to people in need. As we have the means and opportunity to build up our stores, we are reminded of our own blessings and the Lord's words "By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another" (John 13:35). LDS-HS provides an organized and effective means to manifest “good fruit” in a far reaching way. The Humanitarian Service Rooms are designed to support these efforts both locally and worldwide.

How does the HSR work?

In 1985 the Church established the General Humanitarian Aid Fund to assist our friends of other faiths and cultures. The Humanitarian Service Rooms were started as satellite production facilities for LDS Humanitarian Center (LDS-HC), in Salt Lake City. Now most new Deseret Industries stores include space for Humanitarian Service Rooms (HSR), including here in Las Vegas. HSR Guidelines now also include funding for local community projects.

HSRs provide opportunities for individuals and groups, members and others, to serve the needy, locally and beyond, with key activities including; Community Projects, Production of Kits and other items as well as teaching and encouraging the application of Welfare and Humanitarian Principles. The HSRs also build bridges in the local community by identifying and reaching out to those in need. Service Missionaries staff the rooms. Volunteers are encouraged and should be at least 12 years old. Adequate supervision of youth groups is required and clothing should be modest and appropriate for the environment, when attending.

EAGLE SCOUT PROJECTS

Eagle Scout projects which support the Humanitarian Services Program must be approved in advance. The Eagle Scout candidate must bring his Eagle Scout project Workbook with him to the Las Vegas Humanitarian Service Room. The workbook should have the appropriate approval signatures before the visit to the Room. Eagle Scouts are responsible for their own fund-raising activity. The HSR cannot provide materials or supplies for an Eagle Scout project.

Over the past two years the Las Vegas HSR has received approved Eagle Scout projects in the form of toys, quilts, hygiene kits and school kits.
